Naomi Osaka just won the Australian Open, and she decided to celebrate by trying out a new look. In a selfie captioned “Sakura could never lol,” the 23-year-old tennis champion debuted long, bubblegum-pink hair and a matching bold eyeliner. Um, yes.
Sakura, Refinery29 points out, is likely a reference to Sakura Haruno, a character from the popular Japanese manga and anime series, Naruto. “U wore it better @naomiosaka lol,” Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt wrote on Instagram.
Another commenter asked if this look made her boyfriend, rapper Cordae, “Sharkboy,” as in Sharkboy and Lavagirl. The silliness!
The look is likely courtesy of a wig, but we love that she’s trying a new style and color. Osaka tagged her makeup artist, Autumn Moultrie, in the picture, and her hairstylist, Martin-Christopher Harper, both of whom she’s been working with recently for photoshoots. Maybe the pink look is for an upcoming project?
Naomi Osaka opened up about her style to Harper’s Bazaar in January. “I enjoy fashion, and part of putting together my looks on and off the court involves accessories and watches,” she said. “It’s a subtle addition to an outfit but something I think rounds out a look. For me, accessories are an opportunity to be bolder and really elevate a look, so I like unique designs that draw people’s attention…On the court, my look is about ease of movement, not something that feels too confined or distracts from my play. Off the court, I will go for a more oversized or fashion-forward look. Either way, I love to wear bright colors and statement pieces when I can.”
She also told Vogue, “Fashion and design are such creative outlets for me, and it’s become my favorite way to express myself, which is why it’s such a liberating experience when I collaborate with brands. Mixing and matching and finding what works together is so fun and cool. I love to push the limits.”
