Lizzo Tells Fans to ‘Give Me 6 Feet’ As the Delta Variant Surges

As the U.S. enters another COVID-19 surge, Lizzo has an important message for her fans: Keep social distancing because the pandemic is not over.

“Hey, this is a public service announcement, I’m just putting this out here right now,” the Grammy-winning rapper said in a video on her Instagram. “I don’t care who you are—you could be the nicest person, you could be vaccinated, you could be quadruple vaccinated. If you see me, please give me six feet. This shit is coming back, COVID, and people are being real sloppy with personal space.”

Lizzo clarified that “It’s not you, it’s me. I’m not trying to catch nothing.” With her safety in mind, Lizzo said she doesn’t want people to get too close to her, but she doesn’t want them thinking it’s because she has a big ego.

“At this point, I’m going to be slightly rude about it,” she said. “Don’t think, ‘Oh she’s a celebrity, she thinks she’s all that.’ It’s not that, boo-boo. You know what I think I am? Healthy. You know what I think I am? COVID-free. You know what I think I am? Full of vitamin D and vitamin C. You know what I am? Safe for my friends and family to be around, and my coworkers and teammates. That’s who I think I am.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t love and appreciate her fans. “We can have a whole moment from six feet away,” she said. “Show me love from six feet away. I’m not being rude, I’m trying to protect my mother. I’m trying to protect my team.”

In particular, Lizzo expressed concern about coronavirus variants spreading, such as the highly transmissible delta variant. “It’s spreading and we don’t really know details about this,” she said. “Vaccinated people are getting it.” Experts say the current COVID-19 vaccines still provide significant protection against the variants and drastically reduce the risk of being hospitalized or dying due to the virus, but breakthrough infections are possible and can still be unpleasant. The delta variant now accounts for the vast majority of COVID-19 infections in the U.S.

That’s why, “until this is cleared up and we know what the fuck this variant is,” Lizzo requested people give her personal space—and that they take steps to stay safe themselves. “I love y’all and I want y’all to be the same way,” she said, imploring people to take vitamins, wear a mask, and even double-mask. “Protect yourself.”
