Tesco outage was due to hackers trying to ‘interfere’ with website and app

The supermarket giant this morning said that an attempt had been made to “interfere” with its systems, causing issues with the search function on its website and app

Customers are unable to access the Tesco website and app

Hackers are to blame for Tesco’s website and app going down, the retailer confirmed this morning.

Frustrated shoppers have been unable to access services since yesterday, with disruption continuing into today as the company frantically tries to get it up and running again.

Tesco has been inundated with anxious customers unable to arrange deliveries or make changes to their orders.

The supermarket giant this morning said that the outage followed an attempt to “interfere” with its systems.

A spokesman said there was “no reason” to believe that customer data had been compromised.

A Tesco spokesman told The Mirror this morning: “Since yesterday, we’ve been experiencing disruption to our online grocery website and app.

“An attempt was made to interfere with our systems which has caused problems with the search function on the site. We’re working hard to fully restore all services and apologise for the inconvenience.

“There is no reason to believe that this issue impacts customer data and we continue to take ongoing action to make sure all data stays safe.”

Shoppers first reported problems attempting to access the site and app yesterday, and thousands of customers continue to report problems to DownDetector, which monitors website outages.

Responding to one customer who was trying to amend her order this morning, Tesco posted on Twitter: “Good morning, unfortunately our IT Teams are still working really hard to resolve the issue but we currently don’t have any further updates as to when this will be resolved. I am really sorry for any inconvenience caused by this.”
