Tuchel hails Mount after first Chelsea hat-trick

Premier League title contenders Chelsea made a huge statement of intent on Saturday afternoon with a crushing 7-0 victory against Norwich.

Critics have praised manager Thomas Tuchel for making the Blues hard to beat, with much of the focus of his tenure being on the side’s solidity and defensive prowess.

Yet this season’s statistics suggest the team has plenty of attacking flair interweaved also.

Chelsea have had 14 different scorers in their first nine league games this season – the earliest a team has achieved the feat.

Tuchel’s side have also scored 23 league goals so far, one more than title rivals Liverpool and three more than Manchester City.

And Saturday was the 18th time Chelsea have scored six or more goals in a Premier League game – more than any other side in the competition’s history.

When the German coach was first appointed Chelsea manager in January, he was praised for improving the team’s defence.

Speaking ahead of the FA Cup final in May, Leicester defender Jonny Evans said: “Since the new coach has come in, he’s given them a new tactical dimension.

“They look a lot more solid at the back and are playing a little more counter-attacking football themselves… They’re a really tough team to beat on their day.”

Chelsea’s early season form, however, suggests they’re now taking the game to their opponents and employing a more attractive, high-pressing style of football.

Analysing Saturday’s game with BT Sport, Tuchel said: “We played a good performance. We were sharp and put in a lot of effort.

“We pressed high and won many balls, we played with a high rhythm and created a lot of chances.

“To score seven you also need a bit of luck and momentum, but it was a good effort… The focus was that we keep the same intensity and we create opportunities.

“This is what we demanded. You need luck to score and you need the moment. That’s why I’m happy because the intensity was high and the rhythm was high.”

Tuchel’s attacking talents include Romelu Lukaku, Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz.

At the centre of Chelsea’s creative threat is Mason Mount, who scored his first hat-trick for the club in Saturday’s demotion of Norwich.

Former Blues winger Joe Cole told BT Sport: “Mount is becoming one of the most outstanding players in the country.

“Some fans don’t like him but I want to sit them down in front of a touchscreen. What he does is unbelievable. It must be a tribal thing.

“I am yet to meet a player or coach who doesn’t think he is outstanding.”
