Jesy Nelson set to infuriate Little Mix bandmates with ‘rip off’ solo debut

WITH a decade under her belt as a member of Little Mix, Jesy Nelson had earned a break.

And while her decision last December to step away from the band to focus on mental health struggles disappointed fans and bandmates, the girls all vowed to stay close and supportive.

Yet just eight months later, Jesy is set to release her debut solo material — and insiders are predicting that her strikingly similar sound and image to Little Mix’s will only spark fresh acrimony between the former pals, who now communicate almost exclusively via lawyers.

Last night Jesy shared a teaser on Instagram of her first solo song. On top of the stormy-sounding dance track, she says: “For me, this is the music I’ve always wanted to make.”

In snippets from what appears to be the video for the single, she poses in an all-white outfit in an industrial lift and appears to cry as she works with her dancers.

She continues: “I don’t think that anyone is going to expect this. This is the new chapter for me.

“If you genuinely believe something enough and you want it to happen, you can make it happen.”

Last week she joined a troupe of 20 dancers for a video shoot in London for the single, which sources say will be released next month.

And as one industry source forecast, while Jesy’s fans will be delighted to see her return, the timing and nature of her comeback is likely to spark new frustration with her ex-bandmates.

The source said: “Things have got progressively more strained, but seeing her return with a song and an image that could have been taken straight from the Little Mix playbook is going to be very divisive.

“The girls always vowed to stay friends after all they had been through, but now most of their communication happens through intermediaries including lawyers and managers, which is a real shame.

“Jesy’s new video shoot could have been a Little Mix single, it’s packed with choreography and the style is very similar too.

“Her new label wanted to strike while the iron is hot, but the other girls are just going to wonder why on earth she had to quit the band if she was going to come back a matter of months later with a style that looks almost identical.

“And she actually recorded the music months ago, so it feels like putting two fingers up at them.”

In a statement before Jesy stepped out of the limelight late last year, she said: “Being in the band has really taken a toll on my mental health.

“I find the constant pressure of being in a girl group and living up to expectations very hard.”

She added that she was quitting the band “with a heavy heart”, but needed to “spend time with the people I love” and “embark on a new chapter”.

Bandmates Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall told fans they were fully supportive of the decision, adding: “We love her very much and agree that it is so important that she does what is right for her mental health and well-being,” before they confirmed plans to continue as a trio.

But Jesy has continued to post shots of herself online almost daily, and in an interview in May she blamed the strain of making the band’s video for their No1 hit Sweet Melody for pushing her to leave. She said: “The last music video we did was the breaking point.

“Whenever we had a music video, I put an enormous amount of pressure on myself to try to lose weight. I have a fear of looking back on the camera.

“If I don’t like what I see, I find it so hard to be in front of the camera and feel amazing and perform.”

Days after last week’s video shoot, in a residential street in Hertfordshire with a convoy of vintage cars, Jesy moved on to a promotional photoshoot — and tellingly cleared her previously packed Instagram profile of thousands of snaps to leave a blank space, hinting to her 8.2million followers that she is ready to begin a new era.

The move has become a favourite among pop stars, with a host of big names, including Taylor Swift using the same trick to alert followers to a forthcoming announcement.

Jesy also replaced her profile image with a pink circle and has unfollowed everyone — including her former bandmates. Fans had already feared the one-time friends’ relationships had begun to sour earlier this year, after she failed to publicly congratulate Leigh-Anne when she announced her pregnancy.

In sharp contrast, other celebrity pals, including Jade and Perrie — who is pregnant too — were quick to add their best wishes.

Many fans voiced their concern at the notable absentee from the celebrations, who has said very little about the group since her departure — while none of the girls has spoken out to dampen the rumours.

Eyebrows were again raised two weeks ago when Leigh-Anne posted a picture of the band’s waxworks at Madame Tussauds — but cropped out Jesy.

And long-time songwriter and Little Mix collaborator MNEK, who co-wrote Sweet Melody, recently said the band’s dynamic had changed for the better since they became a trio.

He explained: “The songs are great and they seem much lighter and much more excited. I think that’s a plus.

“The dynamic has changed because they’re doing things that are between those three, and they are very aware what they bring to the table now as a trio. I think they are enjoying this dynamic.”

Despite two of the girls being heavily pregnant, they are continuing to work on their own new music, with recordings currently being “mixed and mastered”.

Another insider said: “It hasn’t gone unnoticed by Little Mix that Jesy is ploughing ahead with her stuff quickly, and tellingly they’re pushing on with their own projects.

“A lot of people thought they might end up having a quieter year to start families and just take stock after Jesy left, but they’re determined that won’t happen.

“They’re almost working harder than ever. It’s as though they have a point to prove and it won’t be long before they end up going directly head-to-head in the charts, which is going to make for some very interesting battles.

“It’s fair to say there’s not a lot of love lost between them all any more. The Little Mix girls feel pretty disappointed about the way things have gone, but Jesy is making it clear she’s going it alone.

“Meanwhile, she is harbouring her fair share of resentment too. It’s not impossible that she will come back with a real bang in more ways than one.”

What’s clear, sources say, is that the two sides are now more divided than ever — and despite saying little about each other in public, feelings are increasingly frosty.

Shout out to my ex, anyone?
