Police in Glasgow are seeking camera footage after climate activists deflated tyres on dozens of vehicles in the city on Thursday.
Several SUVs in the city’s West End were left with flyers placed on windscreens branding them a “ climate violation.”
It is understood around 60 vehicles were targeted in the early hours of Thursday by the group which calls themselves Tyred of SUVs.
On Friday evening, Greater Glasgow Police tweeted to say: “We are aware of incidents of tyres being deflated in the West End of Glasgow on Thursday, 11 November, 2021.
“There is an increased police presence in the area to provide reassurance to local residents.
“We would ask those with private CCTV, ring doorbell or dashcam to check if they have any footage that could assist with enquiries.
“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.”
Deflating tyres is the latest in a series of direct actions taken by climate activists during COP26 which ends on Friday.
A spokesperson for Tyred of SUVs said if 4×4 drivers were a nation, they would be the seventh biggest polluter on the planet and “if the 1% won’t take responsibility for the climate destruction they wreak, we’ll make them.”
The notices left on the cars, read: “ATTENTION. CLIMATE VIOLATION. Your SUV contributes to the second biggest cause of carbon emissions rise in the last decade.
“This is why we have disarmed your car by deflating one or more of its tyres. If SUV drivers were a nation, in 2018 they would have ranked as the 7th biggest emitter of Co2.
“Unnecessary luxury lifestyle choices in rich countries are part of what is driving climate breakdown. This process is already having devastating impacts on people in poor countries…and we won’t be spared either.”
