Murder probe launched as man dies after attack at busy nightlife spot

A murder investigation is underway after the victim of an attack in Brindleyplace died, cops have revealed.

The 50-year-old man was struck by an object and fell over, sustaining a head injury which rendered him unconscious, when disorder broke out in front of All Bar One and the Slug & Lettuce, in Water’s Edge, around 1.30am on Sunday (August 29).

He was taken to hospital with a fractured skull and facial injuries and died later the same day. Another man presented to hospital with a broken nose.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Mobberley, from Force CID, said: “We are supporting the relatives of the man at this difficult time.

“Our officers have been working through the night to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

“We are carrying out a robust investigation to find who is responsible and ensure they are brought to justice.”

A large section of Brindleyplace remained cordoned off on Sunday as police forensics conducted their investigations. The cordons remain in place on Monday.

A blue tent was set up in front of the Water’s Edge sign.

Det Insp Mobberley added: “We’re keen to speak to those who were in Brindleyplace at the time and may have been filming what happened on their mobile phone.

Dozens of extra police including dog units and traffic teams were drafted in to the city centre on Sunday evening following a spate of violent attacks in weeks.
